The Mistress of the Copper Mountain is a folktale from the Ural region of Russia. The story goes that a young man meets the Mistress and is ordered to abandon the mine in which he works. He is flogged for his transgression and saved by the Mistress, who offers him marriages in return. The man replies that he is already promised to another, which delights the Mistress. She gifts him a malachite casket full of jewellery for his bride and lets him go with the promise that he forget about her. Despite his marriage, the man is unhappy and cannot forget about the Mistress. He leaves one day and doesn't come back. His body is later found lying by a rock. The tale ends with the line: "It's a chancy thing to meet her; it brings woe for a bad man, and for a good one little joy comes of it."

This design was suggested by one of my Patrons and features shades of vibrant green and copper pigment swirling together, accented by bright metallic green and copper leaf. Finished in a rich copper ink
